First Annual Manitoba Indigenous Sport Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

On April 20, 2022. the MASRC hosted the first Annual Manitoba Indigenous Sport Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, celebrating the impact Indigenous athletes, volunteers, and coaches have had on Manitoba.

The MASRC has created a virtual Hall of Fame and Museum, to rightfully acknowledge the accomplishments and resiliency of Indigenous people in Manitoba. Through their new website, Indigenous history in sport is easily accessible for all. 

Faron Asham, 2022 MASRC HOF Inductee

Faron Asham, Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee and 2021 Manitoba Indigenous Volunteer of the Decade, was among the 2022 inductees. 

"Faron Asham (Metis) was 21 when he started coaching baseball in Portage la Prairie in 1990. In 2018 he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame and in 2021 he was named Manitoba's Indigenous Volunteer of the Decade. In 2017, Asham coached Team Manitoba to a silver medal at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, the highest placement for a Manitoba baseball team on a Canada Games podium in 32 years." Source: MASRC HOF

Yolande (Teillet) Schick, 2022 MASRC HOF Inductee

Yolande (Teillet) Schick, one of the youngest athletes to play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was also inducted. 

"An outstanding catcher for the St. Vital Tigerettes softball team, the St. Vital-born Schick was scouted to play professional baseball. At age 17, she became the youngest player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). She played three seasons in the AAGPBL and in 1988, all the Canadian born players in the AAGPBL were inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. She was the grand niece of the Father of Manitoba, Louis Riel." Source: MASRC HOF
